Sibiu’s a sight to behold and well worth a visit at any time, but its prime location in Transylvania’s highlands is a particular advantage at this time of the year – as chances for a white Christmas are quite good.
As always, the Christmas market is set in Sibiu’s Large Square, in the heart of the city, and that’s probably a big part of its charm. Being surrounded by such magnificent Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture, makes you feel like you stepped back in time into a smaller, cozier Vienna. If you want to have a bird’s eye view over the market, you can climb in the Council Tower that overlooks the whole square.
The 2018 edition of Sibiu Christmas Market brings together exhibitors from around the country and abroad. For the first time, German exhibitors have also come to display their products, attracted by the fame of this event.
During the day it’s best to buy homemade chocolate or souvenirs for your family and friends, and in the evening you have to taste some food from the romanian traditional cuisine and drink a cup of mulled wine.
The atmosphere is particularly special at night, a 20-meter-high natural fir tree lavishly lit, dozens of smaller fir trees, glittery stars and virtual snowflakes projected on the fronts of the surrounding buildings under a huge dome of overhanging lights will create until January 3 the magic of winter holidays in Sibiu.
