Self Guided Bike Tour in Transylvania 2024 - 10 Days

Period: free choice (April – October)

Schedule :

Day 1: Arrival in Sibiu –> transfer to Rasinari
Arrival in Sibiu/Hermannstadt. Meeting with the English-speaking travel assistance and transfer to Rasinari. Check-in for 3 nights in the family guesthouse. 

Day 2: Sibiu and the surrounding area of Sibiu - Cycling 40 km approx. 150 m altitude
We go through the dense deciduous forest of the Rasinari. On a guided tour you will see the main attractions of Sibiu and have them explained. Next you drive past the ASTRA open-air museum, also worth seeing as it is the largest open-air museum in  in Central and Eastern Europe. On an area of 92 hectares are presented exhibits of different dwellings from all regions of Romania. Late in the afternoon we go back to Rasinari.

Day 3: Villages at the foot of the Southern Carpathians - 65 km approx. 450 m altitude
The first stop after breakfast will be Cisnadie, followed by  Cisnadioara. Both are villages that were raised by the Saxons at the beginning of the 13th century. These two villages are well known because of the rich orchards.  Then we go via Poplaca to Sibiel / Budenbach, known for its Hinterglasikonen Museum and to Gura Raului. In the late afternoon we return to Rasinari.

Day 4: From Sibiu to Biertan through the Valea Hârtibaciului - 86 km approx. 280 m above sea level
Today's cycling stage leads past several fortified churches. Hosman is the first stop, then follows Alțâna. On the way you will often see horse-drawn wagons with people on their way to work in the fields as agriculture is the main occupation here. Over Barghis and Pelisor the cycle path leads to Biertan. One of the most important fortified churches in this region is in Biertan. It has been a bishop's seat for more than 300 years.
This is also the place where the annual Saxony meeting takes place. Room check-in for the next 3 nights.

Day 5: From Biertan to Richis and Medias - 56 km approx. 380 m altitude
Short cycling stage from Biertan to Richis. Meet with the artist of the Evangelical Church, who likes to present with enthusiasm more about the region. Further from here the cycling stage goes to Moșna to the fortified church with the spectacle tower. Then continue talking to Medias, another city of the Transylvanian Saxons. From Medias back to Biertan.

Day 6: Wine and Kokeltal - 25 km approx. 60 m altitude
Today's cycling stage leads along the Kokel to Copsa Mare and from there on to Dumbraveni, which has been the Armenian cultural center since the Middle Ages. We continue along the Kokel. At the In the afternoon back to Biertan.

Day 7: Impressive castle town of Sighisoara (day without cycling stage)
After breakfast you will be transferred to Sighisoara where you will have a city tour with guide and will continue the road to Brasov. When you arrive in Brasov you will also go on a city tour where you can see the most important sights of the city such as the Black Church and others. Overnight stay with breakfast for two nights in Bran.

Day 8: Dracula Castle and Rasnov 45 km approx. 50 m altitude
After breakfast we head to Zarnesti, where you will visit the Liberty Bear Sanctuary. Not far from here, the  Rasnov citadel is a “must see”. Optionally you can cycle up to Poiana Brasov at 1020 m, from where you have a very nice view get the Burzenland. In the afternoon you arrive back in Bran, where you will visit the well-known Dracula Castle.

Day 9: Along the Southern Carpathians - 50 km approx. 460 m above sea level
Today, along the Carpathians, we first go to Zarnesti. Zarnesti is known for this Bear observation platforms. Then we continue via Poiana Marului to Sercaia.
At 3:00 p.m. you will meet our colleague at the fortified church in Sercaia and a bus transfer will pick you from here to Sibiu. Free afternoon in Sibiu. Overnight stay in Sibiu.
Optional (only possible July – October): Transfer by car on the Transfagarasan road to 2030 meters in altitude and you ride the bikes “downhill” up to 500 meters in altitude, in 30 km. (EUR 40.00 / Person)

Day 10: Return home
The morning is with free time in Sibiu.
