Experience the Transylvanian Highlands in 2024 - 6 Days
Available dates:
anytime for small groups (starting with 4 participants)
The destination "Transylvanian Highlands" stretches around the Hârtibaci valley, the left bank of the Târnava Mare river and the right bank of the Olt river, on an area of approximately 260,000 hectares. More than 100,000 inhabitants live in 44 communes and cities in this area.
Tourists come to the south of Transylvania (on the Sibiu - Sighișoara - Brașov axis), attracted by the wild nature, the mosaic landscapes, the suprising pastures with secular oaks, the picturesque communities and the beauty of the quiet life they experience here.
Go beyond the asphalt, on old roads that have been walked on for centuries by locals whom will open the doors to their houses and to their souls and will invite you into their world, which goes on according to different rules, those of nature and of balance with the environment.
Itinerary:
Day 1
Arrival in Otopeni Airport Bucharest (OTP). Private transfer to your hotel in Bucharest and dinner at a local restaurant. Accommodation for 1 night in Bucharest.
Day 2
After breakfast you will have a Bucharest panoramic city tour where you will see the main touristic attractions like: The Press House, the Kiseleff Boulevard, the Arch of Triumph, the Victoria Square, the Spring Palace, the Cotroceni Palace and the Palace of Parliament (inside visit too).
After the lunch break we transfer by private coach to Sighisoara 4/5hrs north. Founded by German merchants, the Saxons of Transylvania, Sighisoara became a fine example of a small, fortified medieval town playing an important strategic and commercial role for several centuries on the fringes of central Europe. Our hotel, the Casa cu Cerb, is where Prince Charles stays when he comes to this part of Romania.
Dinner in Sighisoara.
Accommodation for 3 nights in Casa cu Cerb.
Day 3
Our first day’s trek starts with a short transfer to the town of Medias. The villages of this area have been described as arguably the most beautiful in the whole of Romania and today we have a walking challenge that brings us to several of these. The first village we come to is Biertan and continue onto Copsa Mare on a hill overlooking a view that could easily come out of 16th century Europe; a church and village, set in the valley with wine terraces stepped up the hills behind. For the rest of the day, we trek from Nou Sasesc in the Laslea valley to Malancrav with its 14th church noted for its lovely paintings and finally Crit from where we return to our hotel.
Day 4
After a good Romanian breakfast, we head off to Stejareni for our second trekking day. The trails follow sheep tracks and pass-through lovely beech woods along gentle rolling valleys. We trek through Apold with its excellent Speckkammer tower, where the Saxon villagers to this day hang their 30 sides of pig fat. Next, we trek to Daia, which has now sadly lost more than 94% of its Saxon inhabitants, and finally we make our way over the hill and into the Flosa valley to Saschiz where we transfer to Viscri the most interesting and famous village in this area with a truly beautiful, fortified church, before heading back to our hotel for a nice relax and a lovely supper.
Day 5
For our last challenge day, we leave Sighisoara and head towards Brasov for the best preserved and most visited of the Saxon Villages, Harman and Prejmer. This morning is dedicated to visiting these two important towns and we have lunch in Prejmer before we make our way to Magura for an afternoon walk to finish our challenge. We then transfer to Bran, where we spend the night in a villa close to Bran Castle, Dracula’s medieval Fortress.
Day 6
After breakfast we will visit the Dracula’s Castle and, on the way, back to Bucharest, we will visit also the Peles Castle in Sinaia.
According with your flight schedule, you will be transferred to the Airport Bucharest Otopeni (OTP).
